Why Changing Seasons?

By fully embracing Changing Seasons, this year’s theme for ESEA Heritage Month, we gain the opportunity to reflect on the cyclical nature of life.

Our lives are shaped by the things and experiences we encounter.

Just as the seasons transition, so do our cultures, perspectives and identities within the ESEA communities and beyond.

This theme encapsulates our collective journey towards new beginnings, growth and evolving identities.

Our community initiative aims to celebrate Sheffield as a diverse city and create a safe and supportive place for the older generation as well as those whose lives are so beautifully intertwined with them.

We hope to reach out to the elderly or those with memory loss, who due to language or cultural gaps might find it difficult to access social, legal, financial or medical help.

There are approximately 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK, 15,000 of whom come from black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities. The latter statistic is concerning because many of the people from BAME groups living with dementia will receive no support or will be diagnosed too late for symptomatic treatments to help. Language and cultural barriers, and fear of stigmatisation mean that some of the most marginalised and isolated people never access the help they need.

We are excited to engage and stimulate conversation, and bridge cultural and generational differences, particularly with those who have become increasingly socially isolated since the pandemic due to language and disability barriers.

Our events aim to raise awareness and funds so that we can help provide a safe, welcoming and enjoyable place for people experiencing memory loss and isolation. And we see those family members, carers and friends seeking a little support. Our initiative will help them feel valued and better equipped to deal with the enormous challenges they face.

We would also like to help pass on and preserve a legacy to the next generation, so that they feel included and accepted in society while remembering our forefathers and recognising their efforts in building a home overseas.

We extend a warm invitation to all to join us in celebrating, observing and exploring life's Changing Seasons.
