Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way to help the local community and develop yourself.

Whether you've volunteered before or not, Changing Seasons is looking for people like you who are interested in giving it a go!

We are looking for dedicated volunteers to help at Tea, Chat & Photo café held at the Sheffield Chinese Community Centre to improve the health and wellbeing of people in Sheffield’s East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) community.

This is a flexible role that gives you the opportunity to support people in a relaxed yet meaningful way - simply by having conversations over a cup of tea!

Dementia Cafes are a friendly and informal environment where people with dementia and their carers can meet with peers to receive support and training, and take part in activities.

What’s involved?
  • Committing two hours every two weeks or once a month

  • Lead informal but constructive discussions to support participants who want to take part in activities

  • Actively listen to participants

  • Take part in activities alongside participants to encourage engagement

  • Contributing to the planning of Dementia Café sessions

  • Keeping a register and helping with monitoring

  • Help setting up/clearing away

  • Planning and taking part in fun activities

You will not be required to provide personal care (e.g., feeding, washing) or give direct medical advice to clients.

What skills do I need?

As a Dementia Group Volunteer, we ask that you have:

  • Empathy for people with dementia

  • An ability to take ownership of situations arising and to use your initiative to complete tasks

  • Basic understanding of dementia, or a willingness to learn

  • Good interpersonal skills

  • Ability to encourage participation in health-promoting activities at the Chinese Community Centre and in the wider community

  • Cantonese, Hakka or Mandarin language proficiency preferred but not necessary
